Andrew White the Anglican Chaplain to Baghadad, now popularly known as the Vicar of Baghdad recently visited Highfield. He spoke about the continuing insecurity and terrorism which blight the lives of ordinary Iraqis and the life of the St Georges Church, where he is Rector.

St Georges runs a medical and dental clinic, medical laboratory and school and is in the process of building a kindergarten. In addition to supporting the congregation of the church the clinic provides services to anyone in need and Canon Andrew said: "One of the key ways we can show the love of Christ is through the clinic by: filling their teeth; giving them ECG's and delivering their babies.

The church is growing organically, with people choosing to follow Jesus despite the often severe consequences for those who leave Islam. Andrew said: "Last year I baptised 30 Muslims and 11 were killed in the following week. We have a lot of Muslims who come to the church and I tell them all quite honestly if you are baptised you might be killed. Most of them still say 'We want to follow Jesus, we want to be Christians'.

The cost of running St Georges Church and the educational and medical services it provides now amounts to around $170,000 per month, a sum which is raised through donations to the Foundation for Reconciliation and Relief in the Middle East. The website of the Foundation is www.frrme.org.

highfield church fc - champions 2009/10

On Saturday 24th April, HCFC played their last game of the season in the first division of the Solent Churches League. Sitting 2 points behind Community Church in second place but with a game in hand, Highfield travelled to Portsmouth to play Portsmouth Victory, the last game of our season. The side was very pumped up for the game but at half-time this had not translated into effective football with a number of good chances going begging and worse, Victory going into half- time 2-1 ahead having stolen break away goals. The second half was however, a different kettle of fish with Highfield showing a new directness and dynamism. At full time Highfield had more than made up the difference ultimately running out 4-2 winners. The match was followed by hearty celebrations, this being the first time in it's 6 year league history that Highfield have won the league trumping Commmunity Church, last year's league winners by one point.

Starting Monday April 19 2010, Nick Hutchinson, the student pastor at Highfield will be hanging out in Lattes in the library from 3-5pm every Monday of term time except 3rd and 31st May. I know you are all working hard and probably a bit stressed. So take a break from your work for half an hour or so, come find me and I'll shout you a coffee or whatever, we can have a chat and just relax. Bring your friends too if you want. Just contact Nick to say you are coming and he'll look out for you.

'On May 6th vote with compassion and mercy' - reads the poster on the large display outside the church. It affirms three key truths: firstly that it is our responsibility to be engaged in the political process and to vote. Secondly, that it is good to consider our vote in relation to the needy and the less fortunate rather than what might best suit us as individuals And thirdly, (because it is being posted outside a church) that as Christians we believe God is interested and involved in how we live our lives. The Southampton Christian Network in partnership with Churches Together are sponsoring Hustings for candidates on Sunday May 2nd.

baptism and confirmation classes

On Sunday 6th June there will be a water baptism at Calshot in the afternoon followed by our annual Confirmation service in the evening. If you have made a commitment to Christ or want to find out what baptism and confirmation mean, there will be Wednesday evening classes for teenagers (led by Graham) and adults on Tuesday evenings (led by Chris) starting shortly. On Saturday April 3, 2010 from 11am to 12 noon, we are holding an egg hunt on Portswood Road. Join us for a coffee in Trago at 10.30am when all will be explained.

Solve the clues, find the shops, collect your stickers and reveal the mystery words. Then return to Trago at 12 noon and swap your form for an Easter Egg.

On Good Friday (April 2, 2010), Highfield Church is holding a Messy Easter event for families with children aged from 0 to 11. The event is being held in the Church Centre and runs from 10.30am to 1pm and is for parents and children together. The plan for the day is:

10.30: Arrive at the Church Centre and welcome
10.30-11.00: Refreshments and board games
11.00-12.00: Crafts and activities, chill out and DVD, baby room
12.00-12.30: An Easter journey
12.30-1.00: Lunch (pizza, fruit and hot cross buns provided) and talk
1.00: Goodbye

Parents who wish attend the Good Friday service in the Church from 12.00-1.00pm can leave their children at Messy Easter.

There is no charge for the event. If you wish to make a donation, a suggested contribution of £2 would be welcome to help with costs.

fauré's requiem - a report

100 singers gathered on Saturday March 27 to learn and perform Fauré's Requiem as part of our mission 10 initiative. The open invitation to all comers was surprisingly successful, attracting a significant number of people who either knew the piece or could read music well. This enabled those who hadn't a clue what they needed to do to measure the pitch and timing and produce a sound that was really quite lovely.

A hundred others came to hear the performance and as they say 'A good time was had by all'.

Thanks were due to our music director's Chris, Merrielle and Laura who worked hard to make it possible. Sophie Sayer also performed beautifully a Faure cello piece and Edmund Sayer along with the choir provided refreshments for singers and for listeners.

The final thank you goes to Gabriel Fauré himself, who when criticised for underplaying the fear of death in his work, responded by saying 'I see death as a happy anticipation of life'.

We are looking for two Interns to serve God whie receiving practical training in ministry. Half of thei practical ministry will be spent in our children, youth and student department.

This is an exciting opportunity to explore your own calling under God while gaining experience and training in Christian ministry.

We can offer:

The opportunity to discover and develop your God given ministry gifts;
The support of a large staff team and church;
A planned and structured involvement in many areas of ministry;
An income of £360 per month for 19 hours and a rent allowance (if needed) of £125 per month.

We are looking for someone who:

Has a lively Christian faith;
Is enthusiastic about exploring their future Christian ministry;
Is keen to learn;
Would be able to work within an Anglican Church committed to renewal.
